This is my story about becoming addicted to marijuana. I do not feel that everyone gets addicted to it and I do not feel that it's dangerous, but it is definitely possible to become addicted to it and it can definitely begin to impact you negatively after many years. I smoked marijuana multiple times a day every day for 8 years+ and then I quit. This is my story. Addiction is defined as a harmful relationship with a substance or behaviour. It is commonly associated with smoking, alcohol and drugs. But as a condition it's difficult to understand. Do we treat it as a neurological disorder? Or is it a personality trait? And how can we best overcome it, when current treatments for addiction have a relapse rate of about 70 percent? Dr Farrah Jarral travels to the University of Massachusetts to meet a psychiatrist who is using the power of the mind to overcome addiction. - Subscribe to our channel: http://aje.io/AJSubscribe - Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish - Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera - Check our website: http://www.aljazeera.com/

We need to stop blaming addicts and start treating them. Right now, our treatment options are severely limited and often misguided. In this talk, Ed Stevenson passionately describes why we desperately need more treatment centers and better treatment options if we are to help our friends and family who struggle with addictions. Ed was born in Leadville Colorado, which is referred to as the two-mile- high city sitting at 10,252 feet. He grew up in the Pacific Northwest where he attended college and majored in Business and Photography. Prior to graduation he was sought after by a large multi-national firm and then spent most of his career as an executive in the software consulting industry, working with Fortune 500 companies in Alaska, California and Seattle prior to settling in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho a few years ago. Once back in the Northwest, he and his wife co-founded Life Recovery Solutions, a behavior modification software company. His brother and nephew both died at an early age because of drugs and alcohol and because of this he spends his free time helping those struggling with addiction and other afflictions. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Video reveals shocking truths about addiction treatment and therapy they don't want you to see! Click here to watch http://bit.ly/27S5gsl We all think we “know” a lot about addictions. Individuals in recovery especially, believe that they have particular insight—but even those who have never set foot in a 12-step meeting or found themselves incapable of withstand the call of drugs are convinced of their understanding of drugs and habit. After all, almost every United states kid is confronted with drug education (D.A.R.E) in public school. Unfortunately, most of what we think we “know” is a little bit wrong or centered more on belief than on truth or absolutely separated from truth. But because we think we already “know” what we need to know, the misunderstandings and misunderstandings are constantly recurring. Consider two of the most common: 1. “Once an addict, always an addict.” This assumption resonates with people in 12-step recovery, where the issue is typically experienced as a constant, relapsing disorder. However, studies that follows heavy drinkers and drug users over time finds that the majority of people who, at some point, met the standards used to define addiction no longer do so later in life—and that most have recovered without attending group meetings or therapy. 2. “Hitting bottom.” Likewise, many people believe that recovery is only achievable once an addict gets to a serious low, an unrivaled level of self-destruction. A staple of 12-step meeting shares, stories emphasizing “bottoming out” as the catalyst for giving up do in fact reflect the perception many people have of their experience. However, like the idea that “real addicts” can never be reasonable or quit without treatment, the concept of the “bottom” can only be described retrospectively, however hellish it can be to actually live through these lows. But sad to say, the myth that by making the lifestyles of addicts tougher we can push them to “hit bottom” permeates much of our treatment and drug policy. Since the assumption that addicts need tough love is so wide-spread in popular culture that we never take a look at its credibility, we continue to persist in treating addicts harshly—from cutting them out of our lives to locking them up in prison—while justifying this harshness as “help.” There is no lack of evidence that the result of tough love is often harm rather than help. Kurt Cobain committed suicide after being confronted about his addiction in an intervention; Terry McGovern, daughter of the former vice-president, died drunk in a snow bank after her parents pulled away from her. Yet we tend to neglect the possibility of such unfavorable outcomes. We think we “know” that toughness works because we are consistently exposed to the claim that it does, when, in fact, studies show that kinder approaches that don’t risk pushing people into more intense behavior have been shown to be the most effective at getting people help. These predominant but outmoded concepts about addiction and recovery multiply because people are only hardly ever informed that their unexamined assumptions aren’t based on sound data. Generalist news reporters covering addiction simply perpetuate the myths, not even realizing that the conventional wisdom they personify has been refuted. And since everyone thinks they know about addiction, the media has no reason even to consider using specialist reporters. Every now and then we get a “counterintuitive” or “debunking” story—and then go back to ignoring the data. The issue is further complicated by the fact that people whose personal recovery is based on a particular view are often resilient to other perspectives for fear that recognizing the complexity will lead to relapse. For example, if you recognize that some people recover by moderateness, you might be enticed to try it—even even though you’ve never succeeded at it yourself. These fears are understandable, but they are antithetical to efficient addiction policy and reporting. You have to be able to leave your own problems out of it. There is no lack of proof that the effect of tough love is often harm rather than help. This puts me in the strange position of promoting against my own experience as a source of expertise. But the reality is that simply recovering from addiction by one path doesn’t make me an expert—any more than conquering cancer by one form of chemotherapy does. No one would listen to me if I endorsed chemo only because that was what “worked for me” when I had cancer because we know that being a successful patient doesn’t make me a doctor. What can we learn from methamphetamine addicts about ending our own addictions? Psychologist Dr. Nicholas Taylor develops community based treatment methods for methamphetamine and other drug addictions. He believes that any of us can break the cycle of addiction by experiencing and relearning “natural” sources of pleasure -- spending time playing with children, talking with loved one, taking a walk in nature, etc. In this talk he explains how reconditioning pleasure is simple and essential. Heroin Addiction Treatment http://tinyurl.com/heroineaddictiontreatment Heroin Addiction Treatment Centers Heroin Addiction Treatment Statistics Heroin Addiction Treatment Chicago Heroin addiction treatment needs to not only focus on detox but also help the addict to learn certain coping skills and addiction management skills that help the addict to lessen his cravings to use. Heroin addiction withdrawal can be extremely painful and hard to go though, but using certain nutrients, doctors show, lessen withdrawal symptoms. Cocaine addiction treatment is the same as well. Instead of just focusing on a "7 day rehab" we need to focus on coping skills and addiction management techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy to help addicts to learn to manage intrusive thoughts to use. Gambling addiction treatment does not have as sever withdrawal as harder street drugs, but it affects the brain in similar ways and using evidence based methods to manage addictions is the best way to stop cravings and impulses to use your drug of choice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T61obTvvx3A Heroin Addiction Treatment http://tinyurl.com/heroineaddictiontreatment Heroin Addiction Treatment Centers Heroin Addiction Treatment Statistics Heroin Addiction Treatment Chicago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T61obTvvx3A
